| Information about "Sustainable Energy Systems" |
Sustainable Energy Systems
Within the area of "Focusing and Integrating European Research" there are a number
of thematic priorities. One of these, "Sustainable Development, Global Change and
Ecosystems", contains the sub priority "Sustainable Energy Systems".
The strategic objectives of the sustainable energy systems programme of research include:
To achieve these objectives the Commission have allocated a budget of €810 million over the period 2003 – 2006 of which approximately €445 million remains.
Programme Structure
In addressing its strategic objectives the research activities within "Sustainable Energy Systems" need to be such that they focus on both projects that have the potential for exploitation in the short to medium term and those that have a longer term impact. The types of projects funded under each of these headings are detailed below:
I. Short to Medium Term Research (DG TREN – €405 M).
This involves research into:
These projects are mainly for demonstration activities and dissemination of results. They aim to overcome the current unsustainable demand patterns and ‘pave the way’ for the integration of renewables into the energy system.
II. Medium to Long Term Research (DG RTD – €405 M).
This involves research into:
These projects are mostly longer term research activities that aim to overcome the technical challenges to the cost effectiveness of new and renewable energy sources, energy carriers and energy technologies.
For further information on the exact scope of these research areas please refer to the . This document details the type of projects that the European Commission is looking to fund. Please note the Commission will not fund projects that fall outside the scope of the Work Programme.
Further to defining the research areas the Commission have established a series of instruments to implement the projects. These instruments specify how a project or action must be organised and will determine for instance the minimum size of the consortium, the objectives, project duration and maximum share of funding. In the sustainable energy systems aspect of FP6 the instruments include:
Integrated Projects (IP)
- Networks of Excellence (NoE)
- Specific Targeted Research Projects (STREPS)
- Coordinated Actions (CA)
- Specific Support Actions (SSA)
